The importance of carotenoids in the human body
Nutrition plays an important role when it comes to eye health. After all, you are what you eat. Our body itself is not able to produce the vitamins and minerals our eyes need in order to prevent AMD. Therefore, we need to obtain from our daily diet.
Carotenoids is the collective noun for plant (colour) substances, which are mainly present in dark green-leafy vegetables and eggs. From the 50 carotenoids that regularly end up on our plate, the following are most common: beta carotene, alpha-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lycopene, lutein and zeaxanthin. These last two are of special need for the macula in order to maintain its health and its functioning.
Carotenoids are orangish/yellowish pigments. In plants, they play a role in the photosynthesis; the conversion of light into energy. In humans, the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin play a part in the protection of the eyes, as they function as a natural sun block, absorbing blue and ultraviolet light that enters the eye.
